Rosie Little’s Cautionary Tales for Girls

These are not, I should say at the outset, tales written for the benefit of good and well-behaved girls who always stick to the path when they go to Grandma’s. Skipping along in their gingham frills – basket of scones, jam and clotted cream upon their arms – what need can these girls have for caution? Rather, these are tales for girls who have boots as stout as their hearts, and who are prepared to firmly lace them up (boots and hearts both) and step out into the wilds in search of what they desire.

Rosie Little’s Cautionary Tales for Girls is a collection of linked short stories, on the strength of which Danielle was named a Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Novelist of the Year. In this beguiling book, Rosie offers her clear-eyed, slyly funny and rueful take on life, love and everything in between.

Reviews for Rosie Little’s Cautionary Tales for Girls

'Wood’s stories have the appeal of the ordinary—the pains and pleasures that all modern girls and women will recognise … [s]he has a talent for descriptions so accurate that we are by her side in an instant, laughing in recognition of exactly what she means. She is wry and funny and unpretentious—we trust her voice implicitly.'
– Sophie Gee
‘Wood adroitly plays with reader expectations and literary conventions, treating “girls” to a smart, sassy selection of stories that understands adult women perfectly.’
– Book Reporter
'Rosie Little is a rare narrative voice: smart, literary, funny, naive. Her confidences win friends, and her cautionary tales underline universal experience.'
– Kerry Clare
